And I have a few minutes before dinner I’m not going to use for studying anyway.
This last weekend all my roommates and Josh and Patrick came home with Andrew and me, and along the way we made it the most crazy packed weekend we could’ve. Friday night we stopped by Sara and Jessica’s house for pie and ice cream and to pick up the girls bike helmets. Mrs. Young is an amazing cook. Her pie crust is like nobody else’s.
We got home pretty late, and since we had to wake up early we went to bed as soon as we finished sorting out all the beds. And when we were done talking. There’s something about slumber parties…
Saturday morning we all woke up earlier than we would’ve liked but later than the boys, and after breakfast drove to a middle school in Bloomington to start the Hoosier Hills Bike Tour. Sara and Jessica and Mom and Jonathan and I were all signed up to ride 60 K (roughly 36 miles), but when we got to the route split at 14 miles and watched the boys ride off on the long ride we decided we didn’t want to be wimps and ride the short route.
We didn’t quite make it. By about 45 miles we were getting really tired, by 51 miles Sara and Jessica and I were the three very last riders after the others passed us or gave up, and the SAG truck was following right behind us to make sure we didn’t pass out, shouting encouragement at us. At 54 miles we gave up and let them take us home. I was getting mildly dehydrated, and as we watched the last dozen-ish miles pass in the truck I was so glad to be sitting still. Sara and I agreed that finding our limit was much more satisfying than riding 35 miles and wondering how much we could’ve done.
Saturday evening we were pretty much dead. Mom and Dad went out to an anniversary party and left us to feed the kids and put them to bed. Josh J came over to hang out, and we sang songs with my awesome new guitar. Then we discovered that Sara and Jessica haven’t seen LOTR, so we went to the basement to watch it, but they fell asleep before we’d watched half an hour, so we went to bed. Riding 54 miles can take a lot out of you. Poor Mia wasn’t tired at all ‘cause she’d played with the kids all day.
Sunday morning we went to our church where Joseph talked about wisdom in Sunday School and Pastor Bayly talked about faithful shepherds in the sermon. Having communion with my church family at home was wonderful. After church we took Orley B offroading on the church property, but not up on top of the big mound of dirt because we’re grownups now. Orley did ok, and Jessica got some practice driving. Sometimes I wonder if we’re more good influences than bad.
In the afternoon we began a long expedition up north, driving first to the north side of Indy where Josh insisted he was just going to run in and pick up some stuff from his house and run out again. Mia asked why he wasn’t going to give us a tour, so he agreed to give us a running tour, which he quite literally did. His poor family. It was so much fun though.
Then we drove back down south to go to evening service at Southside to make Patrick and Mia happy, and it was one of the coolest little churches I’ve been to. Pastor Keddie preached on Psalm 73, which is also fun to sing even in abbreviated form which we do at home. I loved how he talked about going back to fundamentals when we’re going through a hard time, reminding ourselves that, whatever else is true, God is good. Invading the church with our yellow shirts was cool too. People thought we’d ridden our bikes from Bloomington.
Finally we made it up to Fireside chat, where Dave talked about God’s infiniteness, and after stretching our minds to get it around that we went home where I dumped my backpack on the floor and climbed in bed and fell asleep.
