Bloomington to Lafayette

On Sunday afternoon, after church and after an impromptu small group lunch picnic in our back yard, we packed our little family into Louis and headed off on our first road trip of the summer. Our destination? Visiting family in Wisconsin. Never mind that none of our family exactly live in Wisconsin anymore. Mom and Dad Hobbs still own the family homestead, so we all headed that way, from Minnesota, Colorado, and (of course) Indiana respectively. Collin and I kind of took the long way there.

Road trips have really grown on me since I married Collin. We've both adjusted our expectations, and now I can spend long hours in the car and he makes sure to stop for food and keep driving stretches in manageable chunks. This drive was especially enjoyable, since we stretched the trip out over two days and went up mostly smaller highways through cute little towns. The sun-streaks in this picture are just outside of Romney, Indiana.

Sunday night we only drove two hours north, where we spent the night at my brother Andrew's house. Andrew started at Purdue the same year as I did, and we graduated from undergrad the same year (2007). He's still there, having just finished his third year in his doctoral program. He's about ready to leave. Andrew fed us a nice dinner of Beef n' stout stew, and then we went for an evening walk around the campus of my alma mater.

Walking around the campus where I spent three years of my life, this time with Collin and Annie was really nice, if a bit surreal. My life was really different three years ago. I like the life I have now better.

I have a special fondness for the Lion Fountain outside of Stanley Coulter Hall, because it was closest to the classics department (located in the basement of the language building, since it was one of the smallest departments on campus). It was also where Professor Ipock had his "office hours," smoking his pipe on the benches by the fountain. Annie really liked playing in the water gushing from the lion's mouth.

Collin and Andrew were clapping to test the acoustics in Academy Park. You can't hear the snap that reverberates around the circle with each clap, but the it's worth watching just for the smiles and Annie giggles.

Finally, we made a stop by one of my other... old haunts... the Purdue Railroad club. By then Annie was getting pretty tired, so we went back to Andrew's and got ready for bed. It was only when I asked Collin where our toothbrushes were, after midnight, that we realized we'd left all our toiletries at home. Andrew and Collin walked to a nearby CVS, and finally, with cleaned teeth, we all collapsed in bed.
